🔬 Science Week: Exploring the Walking Rainbow 🌈

12th Nov 2025

As part of Science Week, our pupils took part in an exciting experiment called The Walking Rainbow!

We began by gathering all the supplies and, in pairs, predicted what we thought we would be doing. Everyone was curious! First, we mixed water with different food colours in separate cups.
The challenge? How could we make the colours mix without lifting the cups?

We rolled tissue paper into long, thin tubes and folded them in half. We placed each end into two different cups and watched in amazement as the colours began to travel up the tissue paper. After 10–15 minutes, the colours met in the middle and started to mix!

We experimented with different colour combinations to see what new shades we could create.

Then, we tried something different: one cup filled with red water and another empty. We predicted what would happen when we connected them with tissue paper. When we checked the next day, the water had moved until both cups had equal amounts—amazing!

Our pupils had so much fun exploring, hypothesizing, and recording their findings. It was a fantastic way to celebrate Science Week and discover the magic of capillary action!
