✍️📘 Imperative Verb Hunt in Literacy 📘✍️
In Literacy, we have begun exploring a new genre — Instructions. Before starting, we revisited nouns, verbs and adjectives to remind ourselves of the key word types we already know. Then we discovered a new type of verb that appears in instructions all the time: imperative verbs.
Imperative verbs (sometimes called bossy verbs) tell us what to do. They give clear, direct commands such as cut, mix, jump, or listen.
To help us spot them, the whole class took part in an imperative verb hunt. Working in pairs, we looked through lots of different types of instructions — recipes, craft guides, how‑to sheets and more — and underlined all the imperative verbs we could find.
The children really enjoyed searching, discussing and discovering how instructions use these “bossy verbs” to explain steps clearly. A great start to our new genre!
