This week, our class took part in Children’s Mental Health Week, exploring this year’s theme of Place2Be through a series of thoughtful, creative, and reflective activities. We learned about looking after our wellbeing, celebrating what makes us unique, and understanding the importance of belonging.
We began by thinking about the power of words. Pupils explored the kind and unkind things we sometimes say to ourselves and discussed how important it is to use kind, encouraging words when we talk to ourselves. This helped us reflect on how positive self‑talk can support our confidence and mental health.
Next, we explored what makes us happy and what makes us who we are. Each pupil designed a personalised jigsaw piece showing their interests, strengths, and unique qualities. Once complete, we joined all the pieces together to create a large class jigsaw, showing how—although we are all different—we come together as a caring community of friends and classmates.
We then moved on to community and belonging. Pupils discussed the different communities they are part of, such as their family, school, clubs, towns, and sports teams. Our P4 and P5 children built on this by using junk art to create impressive 3D models of their community. In groups, pupils designed their own island — a place that represented each of them while also showing what connects them. Their goal was to create an island where everyone feels they belong, and their imaginative designs captured this beautifully.
Towards the end of the week, we focused on relaxing and making healthy choices for our mental wellbeing. Pupils enjoyed calming, creative activities such as decorating Valentine’s hearts and icing biscuits — a lovely way to unwind and finish the week with smiles.
